Salvage Title

A title status indicating a vehicle has been written off and may have restricted re-registration.

Definition

Salvage Title

Salvage Title
A Salvage Title is a registration status applied to a vehicle that has been written off by an insurer — typically because the cost to repair exceeds a defined fraction of the pre-accident value, or because damage is severe enough that the insurer declines repair. The exact taxonomy varies by market: in the UK the equivalent is the Cat A / B / S / N system administered by the DVLA, with re-registration restrictions per category. In Finland and across the EU, write-off vehicles entering the dismantling stream are handled under the ELV directive. Sustain360 captures the salvage status against the VIN at intake, surfaces it on every report, and uses it to drive downstream decisions (parts re-use eligibility, listing flags, Certificate of Destruction filing where the body is destroyed). Buyers of used parts often want to know the source vehicle's title status, and the platform exposes it where the buyer is entitled to see it.
